Entrepreneurship is Not Easy

Today I met this nice picture about entrepreneurship from MIT Entreprise Forum, Pan Arab Region.

I am an entrepreneur because life is too short to work in a cubicle

Actually you might think of entrepreneurship as a way of living a restful life where you are the master and all your wishes come true. If this is your imagination please do yourself a favor and look for a full time job.

Entrepreneurs suffer much more than employees. It's NOT easy AT ALL to live as an entrepreneur. Cause this brilliant quote is so true
" Success is like pregnancy, everybody congratulates you when you're pregnant but nobody knows how many times you were fu#ked to achieve it "
Same here with entrepreneurship. You fail 100 times and nobody knows or cares but when you make it everybody thinks that you're lucky. It's not about luck, you just don't see the failures which by all means are much more than the successes.

If you're not ready to fail and fail and fail and try harder and smarter every time then don't waste your time, DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GET A FULL TIME JOB!

Paid Android Apps in Egypt

It has been ages since I first wished to see paid apps on the Egyptian Google Play store.
I think this dream started to come true.

I tweeted this yesterday and there was a single paid app in the top paid apps list on mobile google play client. Today there are about 5 apps in this list.

Google play store top paid apps in Egypt

I hope that Google will also allow Egyptian Android developers to publish paid apps on Google play soon.

One Laptop Per Child

OLPC initiative in Afghanistan
OLPC initiative in Afghanistan, From OLPC website

I live in Egypt, which is considered one of the world's developing countries. We have  problems with education. We have a high percentage of illiteracy around 28% according to Wikipedia. I read years ago about the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project. It's a modest laptop for children that helps in revolutionising the educational sectors in developing countries.  It's a laptop that was targeted to be less than $100 and it's resistent to destructive behaviours like pouring water, falling on the floor, filling with dust. It's amazing. Watch this short video by David Pogue demoing the laptop back in 2007.

OLPC has developed a lot in the previous years, even the name became XO, and now they even announced a tablet under development. A tablet designed for kids and will be sold for less than $100. They promised that this tablet will see the light in 2012 and we hope to see it.

Simply this is amazing. But why didn't our governments adopt such great initiatives to improve education?! .. I believe they're paid to improve the country and make it better every single day but unfortunately I didn't touch this in the past few years.

I wish that someday we will have many geeks/developers/scientists from developing countries and I believe education, specially for kids, is the way to achieve this goal.

In your opinion, what does this laptop/tablet need to offer to be able to shift the education from its miserable state today to the state that we're dreaming of ?

Wikipedia Offline

Offline version of Wikipedia working on Kiwix developed for OLPC computers

Have you ever dreamt of having an offline version of Wikipedia on your computer. If yes, then congratulations! .. It's possible. There's an application called Kiwix that will help you achieve this goal. Quoting from Wikipedia:

Kiwix is a free program used to view Wikipedia offline, meaning it does not use an Internet connection. This is done by reading the content of the project stored in a file of the ZIM format, which contains the compressed contents of articles. It is possible to read any Wikimedia project, although it was originally designed only for Wikipedia.
The software is designed for computers without Internet access, and in particular, schools in developing countries, where accessing the Internet is more difficult or costly. Kiwix has designed a version specifically for the organization SOS Children'swith this use in mind.
Kiwix uses the Mozilla framework and is available in more than 80 languages. It has full text search, tabbed navigation and possibility to export articles to PDF and HTML

You know, in my opinion wikipedia offline isn't a big deal cause the soul of wikipedia is based on being online, continuously editable and always up-to-date.

What do you think, is it useful or not ?

Dropbox Links .. Simple Fast Sharing

One of my interests is user experience design.  User experience design is not only about the shape and look. Steve Jobs had a very famous quote concerning design and I believe that it is very true.
Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works
It seems that not many companies understood this principle. One of these few companies that understood and followed this principle, in my opinion, is Dropbox.

Dropbox has focused on a two points since it was launched. Ease of use and Working everywhere. You can now find dropbox clients almost for any platform you're working on. And Dropbox is dead simple to use. You don't have to learn or remember anything about it and this,in my opinion , is the secret sauce of Dropbox success.

Recently I got email from Dropbox announcing a cool new feature which is Dropbox links.

Now you can make links to files or folders in your Dropbox. Quickly share your photos, docs, and videos with friends and colleagues — even if they don't have Dropbox!

Is this the new feature, I believe no cause I've shared items via dropbox with people who didn't have dropbox before but what's new is this

Dropbox links ease of use
Click the picture to enlarge it!
Notice now how simple it is to share files and even complete folder to anyone. It's extremely simple. Dropbox UX Design team is genius, no doubt about it.

I recommend that you try this new feature and tell me your opinion

A Developer's Opinion of Different Mobile App Stores

Google Play Store Logo

I wanted to blog about this long ago. Thankfully I have the experience of managing different accounts on different mobile app stores including Apple's App Store, Google Play, Ovi Store and some operator stores that are not worth mentioning :)

Every store of these has positives and negatives from developer/publisher/business points of view.

Apple's App Store

Positives:

  • Clean and responsive publisher control panel
  • Sharing features embedded in the store, you can share app link to social networks
  • Ability to check reviews, crash reports, modify description and price from a single place.
  • In a country like Egypt you, as a publisher, don't have a problem with publishing paid apps at all.

Negatives:

  • The review process takes long time.
  • Developer dosen't have full control on app release time and update time. Apple review may take longer than what you planned for and this is costly.
  • No availability of communication channel between publisher and reviewers, not able to reply for bad reviews for example.
  • The reporting system needs to be more effective cause monthly reports get deleted and If you wanted to know the total amount of sales your app made since you launched the app, you're gonna have a hard time on the control panel.
  • No operator billing is available, at least in Egypt.

Google Play

Positives:

  • Clean developer console interface with good analytics look.
  • You can upload the app and deliver it to users within an hour, that's AMAZING. No sluggish review process and developer has more control on when to release an app.
  • There are ways to do some google play store search engine optimization and it works. I've tried some of these ways, It takes some time but works at the end.
  • The download numbers insights on the store encourages people to download you app If it's doning well.
  • Google recently allowed top publishers to reply to customer reviews, Yay! It's a great feature although it's hard to be a "Top Developer" :)

Negatives:

  • As a publisher from Egypt and some other countries, You are not allowed to publish paid apps till now. That's really annoying.
  • No operator billing is available, at least in Egypt.

Nokia (Previously Ovi) Store

Positives:

  • Allows paid apps downloads and publishing in Egypt.
  • Operator Billing is enabled with more than one operator.

Negatives:

You know, this list can be too damn long! .. but anyway I'll point to the most annoying ones
  • The publisher control panel is very old-style.
  • The mobile store client doesn't allow sharing, I've emailed Nokia store team more than one time about this problem. This feature is gonna make them and the developers tons of money but they don't care!!!!
  • The review process is stupid, your app can be rejected for a reason that could be detected while pressing submit instead of waiting days to know and fix the trivial problem.
  • You don't have access to user reviews.
  • The analytics section is delayed 2 days :s .. and the section doesn't provide much info.
  • The billing matrix is weird, getting 10 downloads from india = 1 download from poland :s
  • That's enough, I've some other work to do. It's almost infinite list :D

What about you?

Can you tell me your experience with theses stores and other ones ? .. I'm interested to know about Windows Phone Marketplace too.

If you liked this blog entry please help spreading it by clicking on any of the sharing options below.

Happy Birthday SMS, RIP Soon ?

Happy Birthday SMS

Yesterday, December 3rd 2012, was the 20th Birthday for SMS. Quoting from Wikipedia:
The first SMS message[22] was sent over the Vodafone GSM network in the United Kingdom on 3 December 1992, from Neil Papworth of Sema Group (now Mavenir Systems) using a personal computer to Richard Jarvis of Vodafone using an Orbitel 901 handset. The text of the message was "Merry Christmas."
BTW, I don't know why on earth they sent "Merry Christmas" on December 3rd!!
Anyway, Happy birthday dear SMS, but I'm afraid it won't be long until we say "RIP SMS!".

Why is SMS in danger ?

With the rise of the smart phones powered by iOS, Android and Windows Phone many users found cool alternatives to SMS that use the same identifier which is their mobile number. So, If you're using a smart phone and you're a subscriber of an internet plan then you most probably won't need to send SMS to many people. Smart phones have been a choice for many users even in emerging markets and developing countries. Cheap Android powered phones made it easier for the users to have a smart phone. Even the feature phones got smarter, take Nokia's Asha as an example. Now with a $150 phone you have a mobile apps store in which you can find many alternatives to SMS that will cose you nothing compared to the high price you pay for every single SMS. You can chat all day on Whatsapp and end the day paying less than the price of a single SMS.

Will operators allow SMS to die ?

I believe yes! .. But they're gonna replace it with a very cool thing. You know what's the most important feature of the SMS ? .. It's interoperable. It just works, whatever your operator, your mobile or your language. Whatsapp user won't be able to chat with somebody who doesn't have Whatsapp installed on his phone. But with SMS you don't think whether the other side has SMS capable mobile phone or not, because all mobile phones are SMS capable.

So, What's the mobile operators' reply to Whatsapp ?

Did you hear about joyn ? .. joyn is an initiative that will provide smart services like chatting, file transfer, video calls out of the box across all operators. What makes joyn powerful is that it's based on a standard called the RCS standard. When it's fully deployed I believe that it will kill Whatsapp-like applications and will help mobile operators maintain the users who they retained along the past years.

What's your opinion?

Will SMS die? .. will whatsapp win at the end? .. Will joyn take all of the cake from the rest of the players ?

Let me know your opinion, just add a comment in the comments section below!

Facebook Social Jobs

facebook social jobs partnership snapshot

While stumbling on the internet I found a remarkable piece of news that I wanted to share.

Do you know about "Facebook Social Jobs" ?

The Social Jobs Partnership is a collaboration between Facebook, the U.S. Department of Labor, the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), DirectEmployers
Association (DE), and the National Association of State Workforce Agencies (NASWA).
They show jobs provided by five big names in the hiring and recruitment area. (Work4Labs, BranchOut, Jobvite, US.jobs, monster).

The partnership talks about an app, a facebook app that helps people find jobs provided by the recruitment network members of this partnership. It's still an app ,inside facebook, and it's not a standalone solution separate from facebook.

Shall LinkedIn worry about It ?

I think yes :)
Some analysts say that LinkedIn is about 3 years ahead of market in the area of Enterprise hiring. Many many companies post jobs on LinkedIn. And the geographic distribution of LinkedIn opportunities is far better than this facebook app. All the signs are for the favor of LinkedIn. But there is one important thing, Facebook already has more than 1 Billion users. So this app can grow really fast and this can accelerate the market and let them catch LinkedIn within a year or so.

What's your opinion, is it a fad or it's a game changer ?

Telling a story: A great email from Pinterest

Telling a story: A great email from Pinterest

I've just received an email from pinterest. I was hesitated about reading it cause it seemed to be long, but the content captured my attention as marketing loving person.

Instead of breaking the window and trowing the announcement through it, the sender told a story. And the not-too-short email felt a nice-to-read morning message. Here's the content of the email:
Hi, Bassem!
I had two thoughts driving home from the hospital with my wife, Divya. The first was, “I can’t believe I’m a Dad.” The second was, “I hope I can get our new baby, Max, out of that new car seat when we get home.”
During the first couple weeks, we started to figure out all the little things that are second nature for experienced parents: changing diapers, swaddling a wriggly infant, and doing every household task with one arm. As usual, Divya was a few steps ahead of me. When our doctor suggested we buy a humidifier she said, “Oh, I already have one!” When I was getting Max ready for his first bath, she pulled out a neat homemade bath kit, complete with a tiny towel, comb and toothbrush. I felt like I’d forgotten to read a secret New Baby Instruction Manual. In an exasperated moment, I remember asking Divya, “How did you figure all this stuff out already?!” She looked at me and and cheerfully replied, “I just follow other parents on Pinterest!”
Over the last year, there have been so many ways, big and small, that the Pinterest community has made my life better. I’m happy to say that I’m not alone. We’ve heard from teachers who use Pinterest to plan lessons, chefs who share recipes, and museums that pin their archives. We've also heard from millions of people who’ve been inspired to pick up an old hobby or try something new. It’s honestly more than we ever expected when we started Pinterest. We’re humbled to be part of such a positive, warm and creative community.
Today, we’re excited to continue this tradition with a new feature we hope will make Pinterest even better—secret boards. Secret boards give you a place for things you’re not quite ready to share yet, like a surprise party, special gift ideas, or even planning for a new baby. We’re testing out the feature by giving everyone 3 secret boards. You’ll find them at the bottom of your profile. We can’t wait to hear what you think!
On behalf of our team here at Pinterest, thanks so much for pinning, inviting your friends, and sending us ideas for how we can improve. Most of all, thanks for sharing your inspirations. With your help, we’ll make Pinterest a little better every day.
—Ben & the Pinterest Team
Happy pinning!
And you read the story .. liked pinterest .. got informed about the new feature and felt that it's a valuable thing. Amazing, isn't it ?

Making multiple twitter accounts with single email address

I was wondering if one can make multiple twitter accounts with the same email address. And found the It's possible with gmail :) because gmail ignores the dots in the account email address before the @ symbol, you can register multiple accounts on twitter using user.name@gmail.com or use.rname@gmail.com
Twitter treats those two addresses as different emails while gmail treats them as a single email.

There is another method, check the references below and Enjoy :)

Apple, Samsung and what's the problem here ?

We have been watching the fight between Apple and Samsung in courts.
Why is Apple worrying about Samsung that much? And why samsung specially, not Android generally ?
Following is the reason in my humble opinion.
We have seen how apple released the first iPhone, and then how the next iPhone (iPhone 3G) was different from the first one. We've also seen the first iPad and how the iPad2 was different from it.

Apple's philosophy is:
Launch a Minimum Viable Product. Wait for a year. Add a successor with little improvements & features with the same price. Your fanboys will be ultimately happy.

BUT Samsung is bugging Apple's way of doing it. Samsung releases many improvements and features in its successor models. This means in a year, samsung releases more features than Apple in their phones. Meaning that by 2016, the iPhone 7 can't be compared with Samsung Galaxy S 7. And this means that Apple needs to put extra effort to keep its market share and keep its image in the customer's mind as one of the most innovative technology companies. Samsung speed is forcing Apple's guys to get more features out, do more R&D work to come up with more prospect features that make sense. Samsung is changing the way Apple wants to play the game and this makes Apple wanna go in a thermonuclear war on Samsung and its products. Then after stopping Samsung's Black horses , it's gonna continue the war on Android.

Will Samsung Die after these wars?
I believe the answer is NO! .. Samsung will be affected in the US (Where Apple wants to get its domination back) and some markets. But come on, Samsung will figure out their way out of this. coming wiht innovative models and designs in the same speed of Samsung today. They will get to compete severely with Apple again even in the US. And by 2016 who knows what will happen :)

The 22 Immutable Laws Of Branding

Lately I've finished reading the book called "The 22 Immutable Laws Of Branding" authored by AL Ries and Laura Ries.
This book is awesome, showing 22 laws to follow when you're creating, growing and sustaining a brand with great examples, of known brands is the United States, of how some brands succeeded and others failed.

I highly recommend reading this book and in this post I'll put the 22 Immutable laws of branding to ease their access later.

  1. The Law of Expansion: The power of a brand is inversely proportional to its scope.
  2. The Law of Contraction: A brand becomes stronger when you narrow its focus.
  3. The Law of Publicity: The birth of a brand is achieved with publicity, not advertising.
  4. The Law of Advertising: Once born, a brand needs advertising to stay healthy.
  5. The Law of The Word: A brand should strive to own a word in the mind of the consumer.
  6. The Law of Credentials: The crucial ingredient in the success of any brand is its claim to authenticity.
  7. The Law of Quality: Quality is important, but brands are not build by quality alone.
  8. The Law of The Category: A leading brand should promote the category, not the brand.
  9. The Law of The Name: In the long run a brand is nothing more than a name.
  10. The Law of Extensions: The easiest way to destroy a brand is to put its name on everything.
  11. The Law of Fellowship: In order to build a category, a brand should welcome other brands.
  12. The Law of The Generic: One of the fastest routes to failure is giving a brand a generic name.
  13. The Law of The Company: Brands are brands. Companies are companies. There is a difference.
  14. The Law of Subbrands: What branding builds, subbranding can destroy.
  15. The Law of Siblings: There is a time and a place to launch a second brand.
  16. The Law of Shape: A brand's logotype should be designed to fit the eyes. Both eyes.
  17. The Law of Color: A brand should use a color that is the opposite of its major competitor's.
  18. The Law of Borders: There are no barriers to global branding. A brand should know no borders.
  19. The Law of Consistency: A brand is not built overnight, Success is measured in decades, not years.
  20. The Law of Change: Brands can be changed, but only infrequently and only very carefully.
  21. The Law of Mortality: No brand will live forever. Euthanasia is often the best solution.
  22. The Law of Singularity: The most important aspect of a brand is its single-mindedness.

Sending Crash Logs to iOS Developers

I've lately met some problems with a remote peer testing an application that I'm developing and unfortunately he gets some crashes. I recently found a way for non-geeky testers to send crash logs to developers. Quoted from Apple's guide

Sending Crash Reports to a Developer

When the app you’re testing crashes, iOS creates a record of that event. The next time you connect your device to iTunes, iTunes downloads those records (known as crash logs) to your computer. To help get the problem fixed, you should send crash logs of the app you’re testing to its developer.
Sending Crash Reports from Macs
To send crash logs to developers:
  1. In the Finder, open a new window.
  2. Choose Go > Go to Folder.
  3. Enter ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice.
  4. Open the folder identified by your device’s name.
  5. Select the crash logs named after the app you’re testing.
  6. Choose Finder > Services > Mail > Send File.
  7. In the New Message window, enter the developer’s email address in the To field and <app_name> crash logs from <your_name> (for example, MyTestApp crash logs from Anna Haro) in the Subject field.
  8. Choose Message > Send.
  9. (Optional) Delete the crash logs you sent, to avoid sending duplicate reports later.
Sending Crash Reports from Windows
To send crash logs to developers:
  1. Enter the crash log directory for your operating system in the Windows search field, replacing <user_name> with your Windows user name.
    • For crash log storage on Windows Vista
      C:\Users\<user_name>\AppData\Roaming\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter/MobileDevice
    • For crash log storage on Windows XP
      C:\Documents and Settings\<user_name>\Application Data\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter
  2. Open the folder named after your device’s name and send the crash logs for the app you’re testing in an email message using the subject-text format <app_name> crash logs from <your_name> (for example, MyTestApp crash logs from Anna Haro) to the app’s developer.

Arabs Got Many Talents

I believe that Arabs Got Talent, many talents actually. Programming talents, Design talents, Business talents, Engineering talents. But unfortunately these talents aren't important for Arab audience. A hot chick is always better to watch, fund and support .. Millions of voters for hot chicks, paying millions of dollars. But to fund technology startups or young bright minds , that's not a will of our audience .. That's why we suck :(

Entrepreneurship isn't all about making money

Making money must not be the soul purpose of real entrepreneurs. Either they have a meaning that they wanna deliver in this life or go fuckingly work for a multinational in Dubai and make tons of money. I believe money is a result of delivering value to customers.  You can deliver the most value when you are working on something you're happy to do even if nobody showed you the money. If you didn't find it just Keep Looking & Don't settle. If you're not a real entrepreneur just admit it and go to LinkedIn >> search for Dubai >> apply for the jobs :) , it's normal that not all of us are born to be entrepreneurs.
