Sending Crash Logs to iOS Developers

I've lately met some problems with a remote peer testing an application that I'm developing and unfortunately he gets some crashes. I recently found a way for non-geeky testers to send crash logs to developers. Quoted from Apple's guide.

Sending Crash Reports to a Developer

When the app you’re testing crashes, iOS creates a record of that event. The next time you connect your device to iTunes, iTunes downloads those records (known as crash logs) to your computer. To help get the problem fixed, you should send crash logs of the app you’re testing to its developer.
Sending Crash Reports from Macs
To send crash logs to developers:
  1. In the Finder, open a new window.
  2. Choose Go > Go to Folder.
  3. Enter ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice.
  4. Open the folder identified by your device’s name.
  5. Select the crash logs named after the app you’re testing.
  6. Choose Finder > Services > Mail > Send File.
  7. In the New Message window, enter the developer’s email address in the To field and <app_name> crash logs from <your_name> (for example, MyTestApp crash logs from Anna Haro) in the Subject field.
  8. Choose Message > Send.
  9. (Optional) Delete the crash logs you sent, to avoid sending duplicate reports later.
Sending Crash Reports from Windows
To send crash logs to developers:
  1. Enter the crash log directory for your operating system in the Windows search field, replacing <user_name> with your Windows user name.
    • For crash log storage on Windows Vista
      C:\Users\<user_name>\AppData\Roaming\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter/MobileDevice
    • For crash log storage on Windows XP
      C:\Documents and Settings\<user_name>\Application Data\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter
  2. Open the folder named after your device’s name and send the crash logs for the app you’re testing in an email message using the subject-text format <app_name> crash logs from <your_name> (for example, MyTestApp crash logs from Anna Haro) to the app’s developer.

Logging with function Name in Objective-C

sometimes i need to log output or operations happening in my Programs.
And most of the time i want to know the function responsible for this  output that is being logged. i Used to do it manually but recently found a cool way to do it.
Inside your function just write the following to perform logging
NSLog(@"Logging from %s",__FUNCTION__);

The output will look like:
Logging from [TestViewController testFunction:];
that's simple Genius :)

if you like it , share it using one of the options below

Calling a function in your App Delegate from a viewcontroller ?

That's how you can reference your app delegate from anywhere inside your application and call its functions

#import "YourAppDelegateClass.h"

YourAppDelegateClass* instance1 = [[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate];

[instance1 doSomeThing];

Hoping this is useful.

Detecting screen size of iOS devices programmatically

Today i needed to write some code that will run on iPhone/iPhone4/iPad.
To go well with such fragmentation you must make some Interface elements change position dynamically based on the device screen size.

To get the screen size you do the following:

That's it!
Hoping it is a useful piece of info

Converting iPhone Views to iPad ones

if you wanna create an iPad version of your iPhone app without suffering making new Nib files and connecting interface items in the view files to their and items in your code then the best way i know till now is the following:

You'll need Xcode 3.2.x. i'm using Xcode 3.2.5. Unfourunately the feature i'm using isn't available in XCode 4 and i don't know why did apple remove it from XCode 4 !

1.Use the Auto resizing mask facility given to you by interface builder wisely.

2.Open the iPhone interface file in interface builder
3.From Interface builder menus choose File then Create iPad version using Autosizing masks

4.Save the new file that will be generated for you. It will ask if you want to add it to the project, add it if you want.

you'll need to do some modifications on the UI but at least you have your UI items connected to your Code. It is big headache to redo all the connections if you started iPad interface files from scratch.

i know this way isn't the best cause iPad UX should be different than iPhone one.
But this is the solution if you wanted to create iPad version ASAP and as a bonus to the customer  :))

Good Luck,
Bassem Elhawary
